The Avs needed that one extra save. They again didn’t get it. As I discussed in my last blog, Budaj is a much better goalie than what he has exhibited this year, but he never takes control of his chance to be that guy. Well right now he isn’t that guy and bottom line is he needs to be better. That being said the defense played a poor game I thought. They didn’t tie up their man and were struggling to clear the puck and were not as aggressive as they need to be against the bigger Western Conference Forwards.
I liked the hustle of the Cody’s in the game; they played like every shift was their last shift. Definitely not the most skilled players, but they seemed to have the most desire out there. Coach Granato said that he kept Svatos out of the line-up to rest him for the next game; hopefully this one game rest will allow Svatos to play like he should and receive the ice time to produce. Last years line of Arnie, Svatos and Wolski should be re-united.
David Jones and Wolski both lost their spot on the top line as Granato was line juggling trying to find anything that would click. Since its only 3 games in, there is no reason for any drastic changes, so I think these guys will get their spots back.
Three constants were the play of Stastny, Sakic and Hejduk. All played very well, but at the end of the day everyone on this hockey club has a role, and each has to play consistently every game in order for victories.
These are the forward lines I would go with for the next game
Jones – Sakic – Tucker
Smyth – Stastny – Hejduk
Wolski-Arnason-Svatos
McCormick-Guite-McLeod
Raycroft will start in net on Thursday, let’s hope he makes that one extra save the Avs need. Lucky for all of us it’s still very early in the year. Let’s not get discouraged this early.
