The most frustrating part for a coach is letting in a goal in the final minute of a game. Letting in a goal with 5.4 seconds left in a game in which you outshot the opponent 33-19 is beyond frustrating.

Yes the Avs may have run into a hot goalie in Garon, and yes they were attacking all game, which was a positive, but when you allow a team that really had no business being in the game itself to come away with a victory in their home opener is border line unacceptable.

Peter Budaj has to find a way to win these games. We won’t talk about his performance, or lack of, in the first game, but he is definitely not living up to being the number one goalie the Avs had hoped. I know its only two games in, but one thing that really bothered me at training camp was when the Avs had already declared Budaj the number one. When someone is well aware that going into the season they are the number one goalie, they end up competing less. I think the Avs should have left the competition for the starter role open and have one of the goalies earn the number one spot. Now the coaching staff is in a tough position. With the way Budaj has played the past two games, it makes most sense to put in Raycroft, but if they do then the media will be all over them in claiming there is a “goalie controversy”. If the staff puts their number one goalie back in the next game it shows they are loyal to their number one, but is it really giving the Avs the best chance to win? I think Raycroft should get the start on Tuesday against Calgary, let’s see what he can do. I still think Budaj is a good goalie, I just feel he needs to know his job isn’t safe and he has to earn it. He will perform at a much higher level.

It’s nice to see Hejduk off to a great start (great penalty shot last night). Wolski has looked good thus far this season as well and Sakic hasn’t looked like he has missed a beat since last year.

Congratulation to Adam Foote on playing his 1000th game.

Next game on Tuesday as the Alberta Road swing continues
