Peer into the Crystal Ball: Mats Sundin and Other 2nd Careers

A little comedy for your quiet Tuesday, as we all await our NHL 2009 game and some training camps to open.

One of the biggest illusions this summer is perhaps Mats and Mat's agent trying to leave a door open, as the message gets clearer and clearer that he's looking for a new challenge in life. One can't blame them. After all, once the season gets started, Mats might be waiting for the river card in some Poker tournament to give him a straight versus a temperamental Phil Helmuth . . .

Suddenly Mats hears with his high-end Swedish senses the sound of the puck being dropped. He puts down his cards, stares into Phil's incredulous eyes, and walks away. Pokerstars, who surely appreciates even a NHL sports star then works on a baseball player on the fence instead.

So, anything can or will happen. But anyone lighting a home fire waiting on Mats should give it a rest. You can't get into a players head who is considering the next step of his life. You move on and if he plays again, great for hockey because the guy is a star. If he doesn't, you remember him as the great player he was. Then we watch him get schooled by Doyle Brunson or Gus Hansen. Then again, can they cow Sundin when he can throw a body check?

However, this is where one can wonder on other players who will eventually be moving from the ice to the next stage of their careers. What would some of these players do as their next career?

So, I will grab my crystal ball and share it with my blog readers...

What's next for Sean Avery?

Sure, he says that he wants to get into fashion, but could anyone predict his own line of clothing? Sean, a closet Olivia Newton John fan, sets the world...ahem...ablaze.

What's next for Martin Brodeur?

Dr. Marty, relationship counselor has a hit show. It is questionable if he's helping anyone. However, he is #1 in his timeslot.

What's next for Bill Guerin?

East-End organic farmer. After ending his career with the Isles, Bill moves from his Oyster Bay mansion out to Mattituk, running an organic farm and farmstand. Sometimes, if Isle fans are around, he'll shoot tomatoes into a net with his trusty hockey stick named Matilda.

What's next for Brendan Shanahan?

Bartender in Cheers. Brendan is everyone's pal in the place everyone knows your name. However, if you are going to complain that your Gin and Tonic is too strong, think twice.

What's next for Henrik Lundquist?

We'll just say: Touch his monkey. Yes, Henrik becomes the new host of Sprockets.

What's next for Darcy Tucker?

Fox News TV show host. Darcy is no stranger to controversy. He quickly joins Fox, demanding they "do it live!" Republicans and Democrats come on the show, despite fearing a debilitating hip check.

What's next for Zdeno Chara?

Sanitation Engineer. After clearing crease after crease with no sniff of a cup, Zdeno chooses the next step, cleaning up the beer bottles and cans in Boston. A pretty full-time gig.

What's next for Sidney Crosby?

No, it wasn't an Olympic diver. I know what you were all thinking. Instead, he is a professional mime. They immediately gave him Mime of the Year awards in his first year.

What's next for Alex Ovechkin?

Secret agent. Skyrocket's past 007's body count by delivering hit with aplomb.

What's next for Rick DiPietro?

Orthopedic surgeon. With his extensive rehabs, Rick gains an interest in the Orthopedic arts, enrolling in a medical school in a third world country that gives him a degree in a matter of months. Though he is an excellent surgeon, there is friction with fellow doctors when he demands to do every surgery.
