Instead of writing about hockey, I am taking the time to write about a good friend. Tomorrow I will return to blogging about hockey but only after the funeral for Tim has concluded.
As many of you know, Tim Kilpatrick.....better known as Buzz in the Ottawa sports media passed away Friday morning at the age of 41. Buzz left this world far too soon and will be missed by many.
Over the past few days many people were shocked to find out the horrible news that someone as well liked as Buzz in the Ottawa community passed away so quickly. I for one, was absolutely stunned to find out Friday morning that Buzz was no longer with us. I wanted to write a blog immediately after hearing the news, I wanted everyone to know all that Buzz did in this community. But after learning that the morning show here in Ottawa on the Team 1200 was going to do a tribute show on Monday morning, I felt out that out of respect for his two morning show colleagues, Steve Warne and Stuntman Stu, producer Kenny Walls and all of the Team 1200 staff that I would not write a piece about Buzz until their morning show finished airing at 9am EST. It was incredibly hard listening to this mornings show as I am sure many sports fans in this city felt the same way.
The first ever radio show I did was with Buzz. About 7 years ago I started being a guest on Friday afternoons for a football segment with the Dandy Man and Buzz while I was writing a Friday football column in the Ottawa Sun. Both of them were terrific in making me feel like I had done it for years. Eventually I met Buzz at an Ottawa 67's junior game later that year. From that point on Buzz and I exchanged many e-mails and calls as well as running into one another at numerous 67's games or one of the Local Heroes Sports Bars in town. We talked about our favourite teams and would always give each other a hard time if our teams went head to head, of course with the winner getting bragging rights until the next time we met.
When I moved to Arizona in the summer of 2003, Buzz would always call or e-mail me to see how the weather was to allow himself to envision what it was like to be pool side while in the heart of Ottawa's winter. He would update me on the 67's while I filled him in on the Arizona sports scene. I told him I would still listen to him on the internet while in Arizona, even with the time difference as I needed my Ottawa fill of news and most of all listening to that familiar voice.
When I returned to Ottawa in the spring of 2006 I had the opportunity to do even more work at the Team 1200 on air and it eventually led to filling in all summer long on Three Guys in the Morning, better known as TGOR. Well low and behold, I got to do several shows with Buzz. It was a blast! For the first time ever Buzz and I were doing shows together in studio. We even had the chance to do Sports Call for an hour on a few occasions when it was just the two of us and it's those type of memories that I will never forget.
Buzz was a big Michigan Wolverines fan while I was a die-hard Notre Dame Fight'In Irish football fan. Each year we would contact each other and have a friendly wager on the game as both teams met each other every year in a huge rivalry. We would put a hat on the line each time. The loser had to buy the other guy a hat. In my case, this past year Buzz got to gloat about the thrashing Michigan gave Notre Dame 38-0. Even worse was that I was in Ann Arbor live for the game. When I returned back to Ottawa I saw him at a 67's game, I was sure to give him the Michigan hat he had won on our fun bet. He asked me to try it on and see how it felt to wear a winning team's hat. I said no way, never will I ever wear anything that has the University of Michigan on it. Sadly, that was our last hat bet and there will be an empty feeling come this September 13th when both teams meet again, this time in South Bend, Indiana. Again, I will be present this time around but the only difference will be that I will sport a Michigan hat in honour of a good friend in Buzz.
For all of you that didn't know him prior to this blog I only wish you all had the chance to meet a great guy like Tim. His mom meant everything to him and his close friends were a big part of his family. Buzz did so much in this city and he will be missed! I still can't believe that I will never hear his voice on the radio again. I can only imagine what his close friends and family are feeling. I have been going through my dad being ill for quite awhile now. He is in and out of the hospital and you never know when that special someone might be taken away from you. Don't take life for granted. Those close to you, make them feel even closer because time flies far too fast. Unfortunately, it is times like these that make you reflect and realize that life is far too short.
My prayers are with his family and friends as well as everyone at CHUM Radio, particularly with the Team 1200 staff. From his morning show colleagues to the many others who worked with Buzz over the past 6-7 years here in Ottawa, I want you to all know that I am extremely sorry for your loss.
Ottawa radio won't be the same without you Buzz.
