Earlier I said that the Flyers had to come out flying, play physical disciplined hockey, and score first. They did all of that and more for two periods and won the game 4-2.

The Flyers hit the Penguins often and got them off of their game early. The Birds got away from all of the things that made them successful in the first three games of the series. They were undisciplined and took far too many penalties. Those penalties turned into two power play goals during the first period. The deficit was 3-0 after one and proved to be insurmountable.

The Penguins power play never got anything going and had difficulty setting up in the zone. The Flyers did a great job of getting in the passing lanes and clearing every loose puck. Desperation tends to bring out the best in a team...we saw it last night out of Dallas and the Flyers channeled that energy tonight.

It was very obvious that the boys in Black and Gold were frustrated. What proved the point for me, was the slash by Petr Sykora on Daniel Briere. It was the type of play that you just haven't seen very often out of the Penguins this post season. Not only does it get the Flyers potent PP on the ice, it takes one of the Penguins skilled forwards off of the ice when they are trying to come back in the game.

Jason Smith was matched up against Sidney Crosby all night and did a great job in holding him off of the score board. Sid had a handful of chances, but Marty Biron was there to make the stop each time.

Jeff Carter was matched on Evgeni Malkin, who had one of his typical road games, and rattled his cage at every turn. He was also held without a point in the game.

Jordan Staal was one player who seemed to turn it up a notch and played an all around good game. He almost singlehandedly brought the Penguins back in this one and was willing them to tie the game up, unfortunately he couldn't get the elusive third goal.

Staal, who was one of the Penguin bright spots on the night, took over the third period. He picked up two goals in the period with hard work and determination. I didn't think that either goal was a great one, as both beat Biron on the short side. The first was very fluky and was a product of Marty leaving the post early. He cannot allow those kind of goals...especially in a game in which he was great. It would have been horrible to have those goals tarnish a great effort by the Flyers goaltender.

The Flyers did a lot of good things and they need to continue doing them at Mellon Arena on Sunday afternoon if they want to force a game six.

There weren't many positives for the Penguins, but they can hang their hat on the teams play in the third period. They generated more energy than they did all night and a lot more scoring chances.

People of Pennsylvania, we may have ourselves a series!
