When looking at this year's induction class, it is the true meaning of what a hall of famer is. From the media, to the builder, and to the players you are looking at the best of the best in each of their field in hockey. Tonight I'm going to take a look at John Davidson, who is one of the most respected minds in the hockey universe.
JD, as the hockey community likes to call him, originally got started in this business as a goaltender for the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. In fact, he was the first goalie to jump from Major Junior directly to the NHL. But it wasn't until he retired as a player when he became most well known.
He joined MSG network to cover the Rangers as a colour commentator with play-by-play man Sam Rosen. His insight became so prominent that he, along with Devils long time play-by-play man for MSG, Mike "Doc" Emrick (who was inducted in to the hall of fame last year) and also JD's broadcast partner for nationally televised games, are amongst the experts of the hockey world who sit at the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee. As well as working for MSG, he has done some work with other national stations such as CBC, Fox, ABC, ESPN, NBC, and of course Versus/OLN (not to mention working major events like the Olympics and World Cups). But for the people of my generation, you may recognize him as the voice of NHL 97 for your Super Nintendo.
After 20 plus year working in the media, it became apparent that he was too knowledgeable to NOT work on the inside of the NHL. When the St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs for the first time in 25 years, they felt that he was the person to get that organization back on track. Most of the hockey world felt the same and is proving it right now, the Blues are one of the most promising young teams in the NHL and could very well be in the playoffs for 25 more years.
Congrats JD, you deserve it!
